What is included in this program?

1) Accommodation

Student accommodation is covered for the full six weeks.

2) Meals

Students are fed three full meals each day, plus snacks in the evening.

3) Transportation

Transportation is provided from residence to the research laboratory. Several recreational trips are included.

4) Research

DRSA hires one full-time Research Assistant for every two students (and, in special cases, for every three students) to oversee and direct their research work.

5) Recreation

A full recreation program is planned each summer. This includes annual trips to Algonquin Park to High Falls and Barron Canyon and an overnight trip to Ottawa. Other events have included a visit to Logos Land Water Park, bowling, an evening at East Side Mario’s and sailing. Students have the option of entering local sports competitions, such as the annual triathlon. Students usually compete against their tutors in this annual event. Evening soccer games and weekend volleyball games are also arranged. All students have the option of participating.

 Do you Need Financial Assistance?

Don’t hesitate to apply. Generous scholarships and bursaries are available. Over 50% of our students receive bursaries from the Academy (up to $2500 per student). Many students are also able to obtain additional support from their communities once they have been accepted at the Academy. If you require financial assistance, complete that section of the application form.

·         A chance to step inside a research laboratory to test-drive a scientific career, as well as providing exposure to the often bewildering range of disciplines within science, engineering and technology.

·         Six weeks experience working in a leading research laboratory, under the guidance of a professional scientist or engineer, and a university science student hired full-time to supervise and guide their research. This helps to put all the science they have learned at high school into perspective when it is applied to real research.

·         The DRSA helps students make well-informed choices before beginning university, and choosing their career path.

·         Educational credits on successful completion of the research. The DRSA is a private school and is authorized by the Ontario Ministry of Education to issue academic credits. Our credits are transferable to other provinces. Please contact us for more information.

·         Successful students are awarded two cooperative credits in the following subjects: SBI4U (Biology), SCH3U and SCH4U (Chemistry), SES4U (Earth and Space Science), SPH3U and SPH4U (Physics). The number 3 indicates grade 11 and the number 4 indicates grade 12.

·         Successful students in the Single Option earn one SBI3U (grade 11 biology) academic credit.

·         Six weeks living in a community of talented young people from across Canada who share a love of science, and other common interests. The most common response we have from our students is that they are surprised and relieved to find themselves among so many people with similar interests and ambition, and whose unique talents are regarded as normal and valuable.

·         Participation in a full recreational program with outdoor activities which take advantage of the natural settings of the area.

For most of our students it is their first time away from home for a prolonged period. They are exposed to challenges which stretch the students academically and socially as they become members of the research teams in the laboratories. Many of our parents and teachers see remarkable changes in our students following their DRSA experience. They list many things including independence, assertiveness and confidence, academic maturity and improved social skills.

These young adults have, in one summer, achieved an academic maturity that I have rarely seen in more than 20 years of teaching….their classmates look to them and their work as models of what students can do with information, logic and creative thought.

What type of accommodation is provided?

The students are housed at Ogilvie’s Cottages, a resort located approximately 15 km outside the town of Deep River. Students are assigned 4 to a cabin, and the cabins are unisex. Each cabin is equipped with bedrooms, a bathroom, living room and a kitchen. Students should come prepared to share a bedroom. Linens are provided, as are pillows, however many of our students prefer to bring sleeping bags and their own pillows. Towels are not provided. Laundry is done every week.

The cottages surround a small lake which is perfect for swimming, canoeing, or relaxing on the sand beach. There is a volleyball net and hiking trails. The Ogilvie’s Cottages are located on approximately 400 acres of pristine forest with very little light pollution. This makes it an ideal location for astronomy, which is very popular with our students. Supervision of this activity is strictly enforced.

Meals are served in a separate building, and students are required to attend all meals together. The DRSA is a multicultural school, and we accommodate individual diets. Please make sure to provide us information upon applying so that the proper arrangements can be made.

The DRSA welcomes students from a variety of backgrounds, and we ensure regular access to spiritual services for those students who request it. The town has 8 churches including accommodations for a mosque (http://town.deepriver.on.ca/church.htm). The spiritual community in Deep River is very welcoming of DRSA students.

What supervision will there be while on campus?

Students are supervised by two Residential Recreation Supervisors, one male and one female, who live at the camp with the students. The Res/Rec Supervisors are university students who act as directors of the students while they are at the residence. They are also responsible for organizing recreational activities and trips, inspecting living quarters, enforcing the campus rules, and ensuring that each and every student has the best possible stay at the DRSA.
