Inreach

Bring a real scientific R&D project to the classroom – through e-Learning!

Inreach is a blended learning experience that gives teachers the opportunity to provide their students with unique STEM enrichment while helping fulfill the requirements of their curriculum. It gives students the opportunity to become involved in an ongoing R&D project and gives them a taste of what a practicing research assistant and professional scientist really does!

How?
Students interact through weekly web conferences with a Research and Development (R&D) team working on an ongoing R&D project. Web conferences allow for two way interaction, providing collaboration opportunities for students and teachers.

Inreach gives keen science high school students across Canada a front-row seat to ongoing R&D projects

Research projects are offered in biology, chemistry and physics. A new R&D project is offered each year.

How it works:
High school students connect via web conference with the Inreach Team for 30 minutes once a week for 12 weeks. A “Scientific Interpreter” (a professional in the R&D subject field) presents the class with the research being done by one of our partner laboratories. The Scientific Interpreter teaches the class the background science that is needed to fully understand and appreciate the research. Students then participate in the R&D project through homework assignments and open discussions. The Scientific Interpreter links the content to what the students have already learned in school.

A university-level Research Assistant works on the R&D project in the laboratory. The Research Assistant presents some of the Inreach sessions to the class. High school students can ask questions about post-secondary education in the sciences, as well as what it is like to work in the laboratory. Giving high school students this opportunity can open their eyes to a future they didn’t know they could have, or didn’t know existed!

The Inreach program is provided FREE OF CHARGE for participating students and schools.

Research Projects for February 2014:

Biology: Effect of Tritium in Fish Cells

Physics: Neutron Reflectometry Project and Syllabus

The Inreach Team: The team consists of a Scientific Supervisor (the lead researcher on the R&D project) a university Research Assistant and a Scientific Interpreter. Together we work with teachers to develop a syllabus for the class in order for students to fully appreciate the R&D project. The Inreach program is best suited for students in grade 11 and 12. It is also suitable for science clubs, however we require a teacher to coordinate the program.
