About Us

Our mission:

  • To broaden and deepen awareness of science and technology by engaging students in research and development.
  • To enhance public appreciation of the importance of science and technology.
  • To help students make well informed career choices among the scientific and engineering disciplines.
  • To build our students’ confidence and capacity in science and its methods.

Our vision:

Advanced public understanding of science and engineering developed by engaging students across Canada in research and development in partnership with educators, industry and government.

History:

The Deep River Science Academy was founded in 1987 by a group of scientists from  Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.—Chalk River Laboratories and the Petawawa National Forestry Institute. These scientists had an idea for a program that would give insight into the methods of research and development to high

school students who had a strong scientific aptitude. The first successful summer saw 32 students from Ontario, Nova Scotia, British Columbia and the Northwest Territories participate in a variety of Physics and Biology projects. The DRSA continues to provide an intensive science program to students from across Canada each and every summer.
